GAME VIEWING, BIRDING Victoria Falls, known locally as Mosi-oa-tunya or ' the smoke that thunders'. is one of Zambia's most important tourist attractions. At 66 km, the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is one of the smallest reserves in the country and its main purpose is to protect the riverine are above the falls, the falls themselves and the gorges below. Much of the park is covered by mopane woodland, which provides habitat for buffalo, common duiker and warthog; hippopotamus and crocodile occur in the river. Tall riverine forest grows near the river, and here bushbuck and vervet monkey, as well as bird species such as the coppery sunbird, terrestrial bulbul, wood owl and the rare Taita falcon, may be seen. Location: Southern part of Zambia; south of Lusaka. Access: From Lusaka follow the main road southwards to Livingstone. The park lies 10 km further south. Livingstone has an airport; fly-in package tours can be arranged. Accommodation: Rainbow Lodge provides suites and rondavels; Mosi-oa-Tunya Hotel has Zambian 5-star rating.
